Hey guys, hope you are all well. We are currently waiting to hear on Rayes appeal. But got a bit of unsettling news. Raye's family have been paying every extra dime they have to the attorney but received notice from him that unless they pay him $10,000 by the first he is dropping her. They owe a total of $26,000 and he wants the remaining by the end of January. So at the moment we are scrambling for fundraising ideas. We are going to be starting a silent auction, the details can be found on the forum at raye-of-hope.org or by visiting the auction page http://raye-of-hope.org/auction/auctionitems/auction.htm. We're planning to run it from the 8th-10th. I know everyones pinched right now with the holidays, but if anyone could help that would be great, the tiniest bit would be great! Or if anyone has any ideas please let us know. Thanks!! _________________ My opinion of course....gotta love freedom of speech! |

Hi Kristi,
Sorry I missed this notice, I keep forgetting that the email notification feature doesn't apply when a brand new notice goes up, if another person wrote the original notice. My apologies. While I would love to be able to donate funds, I am afraid I can't help in this area, and I'm sorry to see that Mr. Jones is pressing the family for funds.
I'm curious, though; what HAS he really done for them, and of course Raye, up to this point? I remember reading sometime earlier this year that even Dennis Fritz was concerned that this new attorney was going to take the family's money and walk. I cannot remember who posted that notice or which forum it was posted in, but I remember the concern quite well.
I have been doing some research into the area of "Ineffective Assistance of Counsel," trying to find some new organizations other than the Innocence Project to take on cases like Raye's. I found one website, at http://www.VoiceofJustice.com, which was founded by two private investigators, and which takes cases where DNA cannot be used to determine guilt or innocence. Regrettably, they don't take cases for no pay, but they might not be as expensive as an attorney either. It does no harm to submit an email to them, maybe something could be negotiated.
One other thing; I don't know how much reading Raye has been doing on legal issues, but if it hasn't been much up to now, I really believe she and her family need to do a lot MORE. This is NOT a criticism, but a helpful suggestion. I say this as a reminder to all of us who have learned the hard way that relying entirely on an attorney to "save" us or someone we know or are concerned about can be a serious mistake. We may not all have gone to law school, but we can still read about legal issues in criminal cases and do as much self-education as possible.
Some attorneys (and I DO mean some, not all) may not like our obtaining this knowledge, but they aren't the ones in prison or facing the possibility of it, are they. Education is education, regardless of where we get it, whether it is the public library, the bookstore, or the classroom. And in my view, if an attorney is that threatened by a client and their family who wants to take a more active role in their friend's or loved one's defense, I wouldn't want to hire that attorney anyway.
