After reading the story about the insanity -- not to mention unnecessary cruelty -- of imposing a 30-day prison sentence for the "heinous crime" of sharing a snack cake with a fellow inmate, I thought, this kind of nonsense has to stop! The question, as always, is HOW.
And then, it "hit" me. Metaphorically, of course.
How realistic is it to expect other authorities to punish L.E. officials, no matter what level they're on, for abusing their positions? I think, not realistic at all. It isn't going to happen. But there's another "weapon" we've been overlooking, which is public scorn, ridicule, and contempt, all of which law enforcement officials HATE to receive. Especially around election time, for those who depend on votes to keep their jobs. The best part of this type of "weapon" is, it doesn't hurt, injure or imprison anyone! A bruised politician's ego doesn't count as a physical injury.
When someone, particularly a L.E. official, does something stupid and mean-spirited like this, do they deserve an award? NO! They deserve just the opposite in the court of public opinion, they deserve what we can call a "Contempt Citation." And everyone here has the authority to issue one where we find an act of abuse and cruelty from those who should know better. Here's how it can work:
We create a new category for our Contempt Citations, such as a "Dumbest Law Enforcement Official of the Month" citation. Anyone who comes across a law enforcement official in a news story who does something like this gives out a Contempt Citation for (name the official and the offense they've committed), and posts it under the appropriate category (I'll create that next). Rather like the old-fashioned public "stocks" we used to read about. Imagine these officials with the white cone-shaped dunce hats with the word IMBECILE written on it, for added effect.
Example:
Contempt citation issued to (name of prosecutor), for stupidity and cruelty in imposing a 30-day prison term on an inmate for showing an act of common decency and kindness in a jail cell. We at What Say You hold this official IN CONTEMPT for a term of 30 days. If he wants to purge the Contempt citation, he (or she) must show political courage, and correct the wrong he/she created.
So, what do you all think? Right now, I think this is the best "punishment" we've got. It's non-injurious, and the person to whom it's issued can simply fix the problem, and have it expunged. It's ALL we've got, for the moment. And if anyone thinks of a new category that I haven't, by all means add it! No reason we should limit ourselves if we don't have to.
