Where can I get a copy of Judge Key's book? That seems to be the only book available that has been written about this case so far, and I would really like to read his perspective on the case as a whole.

If it's available on Amazon, could someone please supply the specific link where I can order it? Also, is it in paperback, so it won't be so expensive to purchase? I have a strong feeling it has a lot more facts in it that K.J. Briggs does NOT want the general public to be aware of, which makes me all the more curious to know what they really are. Justice 1,
Here is an excert from Keys book. Interesting huh?

During this time, newspaper ads, ran by Sheila Kirk, were distorting the facts of Kelsey’s case. The attorney for Kelsey decided to set the record straight, and sent the following letter on September 21, 2006, to the editors of both the Lincoln County News and the Stroud American. Both papers ran the letter he sent as follows:

“To the Editor,

As the attorney for Kelsey Smith-Briggs, I am writing this letter to set the record straight regarding several issues pertaining to Kelsey’s case. Unfortunately, her death has become a political football and it concerns me that some are pointing fingers without having full knowledge of the facts.

Whether you support Judge Craig Key or his opponent, Sheila Kirk, I would encourage everyone to base their decision on the truth rather than emotion. To do otherwise would not serve the voters and citizens of this county. The truth is Judge Key had the legal obligation to return Kelsey to her mother. The Court, as well as myself, were advised that the mother had completed the Individualized Service Plan created for her by the Department of Human Services (DHS), and there were no additional requirements of her. The Oklahoma legislature has declared that it is the official public policy of this state to reunite children with their parents under such circumstances.

The truth is that Kelsey’s placement with her mother in June of last year was conditioned upon the stipulation and Court order that there would be significant monitoring by various child welfare agencies. That is exactly what happened. The truth is that during the four months that Kelsey was in the care of her mother, none of those responsible for overseeing Kelsey’s well-being ever reported to me or the Court that there were any problems with the care she was receiving. The truth is no one ever objected to or appealed Judge Key’s ruling to return Kelsey to her mother.

Based upon the evidence presented to the Court, and the monitoring and oversight requirement that was put in place on behalf of Kelsey, I do not believe that at that point in time any of the parties involved in the case feared for her safety, much less, her life.

No one has a crystal ball or can foretell the future. Judges and lawyers rely on the law and evidence. Everyone knows this. The more Kelsey’s tragic situation is exploited and politicized, we will only move farther from the truth of what really happened to Kelsey. The people of Lincoln County should not be pulled apart or deceived by this sad incident. Sincerely, … Attorney for Kelsey Smith-Briggs”

Excellent letter, and I will be reading Judge Key's book as soon as I can order it. Didn't KB and her supporters go to great lengths to trash it and Judge Key's reputation any way they could?

I would imagine that is because his book contained a lot of facts that are NOT favorable to KB or any of the Briggs family, although I could be wrong there. But I have a strong feeling that if his book had FAVORED K. Briggs and her family, she would have been shouting her praises of the book all over Lincoln County, wouldn't she. Yes, they bragged about shutting this book down, and leaving bad reviews. The sad part is all the proceeds of the book went to charity. They also posted a response to Kelseys lawyers letter and posted his address for other members to write to him "with any questions" you might have! I believe you can read some of this in the links on www.freekelseysmom.com site.

That's just the problem; due to technical difficulties no doubt caused by my old computer, I can't access anything from the FKM site. It's not anyone's fault, just the way things are with my PC right now.

However, you could send either his email or his "snail mail" address to me by PM at this forum, or email me privately, if you prefer. TS has my email address, which I told her she can pass on to you. I don't post it publicly, since I don't want to risk getting hate mail messages from the KP club. Zambeste

I miss spoke, the facts link on FKM not the links.
here is another example from his book,

Finally, when Sheila Kirk had Kathie Briggs call every voter in the county several times with the following pre-recorded message, it was a new low. The message left by Kathie Briggs was as follows:

“My name is Kathie Briggs, and I am the paternal grandmother of Kelsey Briggs, who died after months of documented abuse. Judge Craig Key returned her (Kelsey) to an abusive home against the recommendation of DHS and the DA's office. Judge Key also broke Oklahoma law, which requires DHS, not him, to make those decisions. I promised Kelsey I would seek to hold those who failed her accountable. I ask you to help me, to keep that promise. Please vote for Sheila Kirk, Associate District Judge on November 7th. If you have any questions, please contact Sheila Kirk at 405-258-2300. Thank you and God bless.”

I do not have Judge Keys info but will ask for you.

Good grief; a new low is right. You know what I'd do if I were Judge Key and I knew this message from KB was not only false but slanderous as well? I'd SUE her, for several million, and publicize that suit as much as I possibly could locally. Put it in ALL the local papers, along with the real facts in little Kelsey's case!

This Sheila Kirk sounds like a nasty piece of work in my opinion, and I wouldn't vote for her if I were being PAID for my vote. I'm sorry he's had such problems from these idiots simply for doing the best job he could at the time.

Yes,
I think Judge Keys removal was an absolute disservice to the people of OK. The other tactic Sheila Kirk used was direct mailout, a picture of Lance Briggs in military uniform looking down at Kelsey. It proclaimed that Kelsey was killed while LB fought for our freedom. The mailout also described how LB walked off the military transport plane to learn Kelsey had died that day, and proclaiming that Judge Key should not be re-elected due to his failure to protect Kelsey. He states they were designed to emotionally inflame the voters without one positive reason Sheila Kirk should be elected.
Of couse KP trashed the book as a bunch of lies. I wondered WHY this judge would lie? As I said all the proceeds went to charity!

I'd say no, but I'm guessing it probably could. Supporters of Kathie Briggs have already trashed the career and reputation of a good jurist and a good man, simply because SHE thinks he "should be held accountable." It's only my opinion, but I honestly think the only reason why the DA handling the RDS case, Richard Smothermon, went after Raye Dawn the way he did was to get Briggs off HIS back. He'd seen her destroy Judge Key's career, and figured he was next if he didn't make her happy. WTH? Mad

To me, this whole case is starting to stink very badly; and the stink is coming entirely from law enforcement! Kathie Briggs is really starting to come across to me as a kind of mafia "don." You know, the old "no one crosses me and gets away with it" mentality that gives me the strong impression that she is badly out of touch with reality.

Why anyone listened to this woman in the first place is beyond me. The fact that a District Attorney allowed Kathie Briggs to control the way the DA conducted the case to such a degree really makes me question his ability to hold the office of District Attorney at all.

Again, this is only my opinion, but if Smothermon found he could not do his job effectively, he should have done the honorable thing and RESIGNED. I think he should resign now, but I doubt that he will.

Richard Smotherman was quoted recently about RDs letter to law makers and he stands by his decision and the sentence of the jury. He does say that all the records should be released and everyone held accountable for "what they did or didnt do." Im still suprised that he has admitted that he knows RDs inncoent and stands by his prosecution of her.

Actually, I'm not surprised, but only because I've seen other cowardly DA's do the same thing Smothermon is doing now.

Bill Peterson, the DA who railroaded both Dennis Fritz and Ron Williamson into prison in Ada, OK, never apologized for all of his monumental failures and mistakes, and in fact blames everyone ELSE for them. I didn't hear Mike Nifong in NC formally apologize for his acts of misconduct either, or take responsibility. Laura Gunn and Bonnie Dumanis of the San Diego DA's office, the office that prosecuted Cynthia Sommer, still refuse to admit that they made a disastrous mistake as well, even after Cynthia was released.

The way I see it, Smothermon can now be added to this "rogue's gallery" of prosecutors who have, in my opinion, acted dishonorably, unethically, disgracefully, and have brought only shame and disrespect to their respective offices. I guess THEY consider their actions to be "above reproach." But they're probably the ONLY ones who do. Rolling Eyes

I have read his book and am glad it was written to explain what his side of the story. The way he was treated doesn't shock me however, from what I have read on the grandmothers site, they seem to attack anyone with a sob story without asking questions, researching the case (s) and in fact brings a whole new meaning to Witch Hunt.
I feel so sorry for this Judge and his family. Like others, I feel Okla lost a good judge and I for one would and have never voted for anyone that plays the "bash game". I have higher standards than to want to see anyone in office that would allow that type of campaign, much less join in it!

Agreed; the last type of person I would vote for is someone who has shown blatant disregard for due process of law in any of their criminal prosecutions. That is especially true of someone running for District Attorney or Attorney General.

If they have such callous disregard for Constitutional law when they try cases, and have a very questionable record, showing areas where they clearly abused their office, then in my opinion, they have become a clear and present danger to the very citizens they have sworn to protect. Such a person should NEVER be trusted with such power, when they have shown they don't know how to use it wisely, or even worse, REFUSE to use it wisely and with great care. And such a candidate will NEVER get MY vote, no matter how much of a "smooth operator" he or she claims to be in public.
