I know they only have an hour but I want to see more drama...I do love it and I love the issues they are showing. The one last week with his GF and her shenanigans almost made me cry….How often does this stuff really happen? Will we ever know?
I do wish John Grisham would make a movie out of The Innocent Man…All his others have been huge and if more people could take an interest in this and see what really happens, maybe something can start changing. _________________ Justice is conscience, not a personal conscience but the conscience of the whole of humanity. I'm with you, Pia, I really want more of these issues shown as well. I had heard -- which may have been no more than a rumor -- that George Clooney had purchased the movie rights to THE INNOCENT MAN, and I have heard nothing since. Whether it was actually true or not, I have no idea.
But you're 100% correct, this story needs to be made into a really good movie, along the lines of GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, with talk about the serious ISSUES, not a lot of fluff. We need not only this story told, but a few others like it as well.

So....this show just gets better and better! A recurring theme that I see, although subtle, shows how long a defendant (in many cases) is incarcerated prior to trial. Unless something has changed and I missed it, the Constitution guarantees a defendant the right to a speedy trial. Unless all these defendants have waived their right, which I find extremely hard to believe, their rights are being violated from the get go. Many accused spend well over a year sitting in jail just waiting for their trial - before even being acquitted or convicted! That is simply appalling to me and illustrates just how "dysfunctional" (to quote Steven Bochco) our system really is.
OK....and the more I watch this show, the more I simply cannot stand the Michelle character. _________________ "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing."

Yes, I've noticed that too. And yes, criminal defendants DO spend as much as four to six MONTHS, even a year as you said, in jail awaiting trial, and many jails are far worse than the state prison facilities. I know of one jail in VA where there were FOUR inmate deaths in as little as only TEN months.
Health care for jail inmates? As the old Brooklyn, NY saying goes; FUHGETABOUTIT! It doesn't exist! You (the inmate) want to see a doctor? Fill out some kind of a medical request form, IF the inmate can get a jail staffer to get one for him/her. Most times the inmate can't, because they play "pass the buck" all the way along, and somehow the inmate doesn't get the form until maybe five or more days later. If an inmate has a heart attack at a jail, they MIGHT get assistance from corrections or medical staff, but that's a 50-50 dice roll, and sometimes the dice comes up "snake eyes."
On the Michelle character, I'm with you, Saber, I can't stand her either. But I don't know which I dislike more, her character or that of her even more sleazy boss. You know, the male idiot whose making nasty comments about women every five minutes. What's his name again? Belcho, or something like that?

Well, it took a while, but I finally put a slight dent in the budget to buy David Feige's book INDEFENSIBLE, which I believe was the catalyst for the show. To say it is merely OUTSTANDING, which it is, is also the understatement of the week.
I'm not going to try and write a formal review, because I'm lousy at doing those. I WILL say that from the time I started reading it, I had a lot of trouble putting it down, and my emotions while reading this book ranged from anger, sadness, outright FURY, and back to anger again, all at the many grotesque injustices the criminal INJUSTICE system piles onto anyone unlucky enough to be charged with the most minor criminal offenses. Anyone who seriously thinks the criminal justice system is "fair" is really living in a dream world, and in all likelihood has never had the nightmare experience of being so charged. Or if they have been, that they've had enough money to be treated better than the system treats its poor and lower-income citizens. Our "criminal justice system," no matter whether it's in New York City or any other place, is an outrage, a disgrace, and needs a drastic overhaul.
For me, the book was a MUST-READ, and it now has my orange highlighter on many of its pages. The next time I read it, I'll probably add some more. If anyone wants to ask me questions about it, be my guest, and I'll answer them to the best of my ability. That's the only kind of "review" I know how to do.

This weeks episode has been one of my favorite so far because it finally showed something that I have been waiting for! How the prosecution and the defense will make 'deals' using different cases as leverage. To me, this is just dead wrong and infringes on the rights of the defendants in one of the most egregious ways. Example....
"I'll drop a charge in case A, if you plea out in case B"
It's maddening but this stuff really does happen. _________________ "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing."

Thanks for the compliment, Saber! Every time I think "review" I think of those ultra-formal ones in the NY Times. I cringe at the thought of having to write one of those; no way could I pull that off!
This was the best kind I could do; short, direct, and above all, HONEST. That will have to suffice.

I'd make the same bet, and that she'd deny learning them from him at all. She gives women lawyers a very bad name, IMO.
